What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of exercise and physical movement designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body.  Through a sequence of movement patterns executed under mindful guidance, pilates focuses on the core postural muscles of the body that help keep the body balanced and are essential to provide support for the spine.  This is important in the care and prevention of back pain as well as the rehabilitation of many musculoskeletal problems.

Pilates practitioners use their own bodies as 'weights' in the movements to build strength and flexibility without focus on high-powered cardiovascular exercise.  Pilates can be performed on the mat or on several major pieces of very specialized equipment along with smaller accessories and a variety of props.  Because of the remarkable nature of the equipment to both challenge and support the body as it learns to move more efficiently, the equipment truly acts as a complement to the challenging matwork exercises.
Literally hundreds of beginner to advanced moves are available in the repetoire both on the mat and on the equipment which offer incredible benefit for people from all walks of life, fitness levels, age and ability.

With systematic practice of specific movements coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable not only as a fitness endeavor itself, but also as an important adjunct to professional sports training and physical rehabilitation of all kinds.
